Founded in the 1950s, Symphoniker Hamburg is taking centre stage at the historic Laeiszhalle.

Established in 1957, Symphoniker Hamburg has always been an orchestra for all the city’s residents as well as an essential part of the city’s musical life. Traditionally at home in the time-honoured Laeiszhalle, the ensemble captivates audiences with its utterly precise performances. Yet the orchestra can also be seen giving guest performances e.g. at the Hamburg State Opera and the Hamburg School of Music and Theater (HfMT). And in summer, Symphoniker Hamburg can even be found outdoors at selected open-air concerts. With its music, the orchestra reflects urban realities, while at the same time ensuring unparalleled cultural highlights. The orchestra is led by Sylvain Cambreling, a renowned opera and concert conductor, who is internationally acclaimed for his imaginative and inspiring work. Under his baton, Symphoniker Hamburg excels at creating unforgettable music experiences for residents and guests to the city alike – e.g. by means of  dedicated artistic programmes that are brought to life with selected soloists and partners, such as Martha Argerich. The Swiss-Argentinean world-class pianist and resident artist has also given her name to the annual Martha Argerich Festival, where she invites fellow-artists to perform with her.

In Bergedorf a police station was moved in 1992. What remained was an old building, whose further use was up for discussion. Dedicated people with a healthy sense of community turned it into a cultural centre that has enriched the life of the district to this day.
