The Ernst Barlach House, which opened in 1962 and is still privately run, is located in Jenischpark, one of Hamburg's most beautiful landscaped gardens.

Charmingly nestled in the spacious grounds on the banks of the Elbe, the modern, light-filled museum building houses a unique collection. Numerous major works by the expressionist sculptor, draughtsman and writer Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) are on display here, including almost a third of his precious wooden sculptures. In addition to the top-class collection, the museum offers attractive exhibitions on classical modern and contemporary art as well as the concert series Klang & FORM.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Blankenese & Elbe outskirts

The former fishing and seamen's village of Blankenese is situated directly on the Elbe. It is the perfect starting point for hopping on a sailing boat or on the Elbe ferry, or for taking long walks along the shore. Another highlight is a visit to the Treppenviertel (German for staircase quartier) with a spectacular view of the lighthouse and the Falkenstein shore.
