The evil polar bear Kalle has long found the warbling penguin Caruso a thorn in his side – he wants to get rid of him once and for all and puts him on a train rattling off towards the south. The little polar bear Lars and his friend Robby try to help Caruso, but they end up on the same train. On their journey, they come across a mysterious island and meet eleven-year-old Chucho, who lives with his mother at a research station. Whilst Caruso forgets his homesickness in the arms of Maria, the little penguin girl, Lars discovers a giant prehistoric fish trapped in masses of lava in the depths of the ocean. As scientists attempt to catch the fish, Lars needs the help of all his companions…
