Nature reserves Höltigbaum & Stellmoor Tunneltal

© Johannes Beschonder

The two nature reserves Höltigbaum and Stellmoor Tunneltal are popular destinations for excursions. Horse riders, hikers and walkers criss-cross the varied hilly landscape. Inline skaters do their laps on the wide concrete path.

Various circular hiking trails with significant names such as "Glacier Trace" or "Gallo-Way" lead through the nature reserves. They indicate that the marshy landscape was created in the most recent ice age when melt water drained away and dug a valley. Today, sheep and Galloway cattle maintain the open grassland.

Visitor Centre and Show Enclosure

At the Haus der Wilden Weiden visitor centre in Hamburg-Rahlstedt, guests can find out more about the formation of the Höltigbaum and the Stellmoor Tunneltal, as well as their flora and fauna. Popular among families with children is the show enclosure where Bentheimer Land sheep, forest goats and cattle graze.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Hamburg North

Hamburg North is a wonderful place to live. The city centre can be reached in no time, and there is plenty of nature nearby. Everything goes at a slightly slower pace here. But there are still many things to see and do.
