Tide

Café Tide in Hamburg Altona offers delicious homemade coffee, pastries and hot dishes as well as various useful, pretty and delicious treasures for your home.

The driftwood of the soul – with the colourful selection on offer at the Tide, you will find it hard to decide.

What is that wonderful smell? Half past nine in the morning in Germany, more precisely: Hamburg Altona, a little way away from the hectic hustle and bustle of the pedestrian zone. Warm light floods the tiny front area of the café through the large windows, it smells of coffee and home-baked goods: a vanilla note of beguiling intensity, cookies perhaps, no matter: It must be something very, very tasty.

Because tasty is the name of the game: there is panini with a decent mountain cheese, Riesling-white wine-mustard and rocket. Muesli in decorative jars, organic espresso and a selection of tea that leaves nothing to be desired even for connoisseurs. If you can wait until lunchtime (or if you come later on), you might choose the tagliatelle with home-made tomato pesto, which has acquired a certain local fame.

“Driftwood & Delicacies” is the promise made by the café. And the large De-Cecco boxes with “Pomodori Pelati” reveal that you have come to the right place if you’re looking for goodies to take home.

But you will also find things at the Tide that don’t actually exist. Because they mean what they say about driftwood. If, for example, you want to decorate your flat, you can select a piece of driftwood while enjoying a cup of excellent cappuccino (€ 2.70). Or you can see what else you can find in the hotchpotch of knickknacks: a plaice made from felt that can be used as a hotty cover, for example.

It’s worth popping in – and don’t be put off: the entrance area with the display case is small and usually full. But in the side or the back room you will definitely find a spare seat.

sustainable experience

Here, the concept of offering “Amazing, honest and delicious products” comprises the finest coffee specialities and seasonal organic cakes, along with homemade paninis and all different kinds of delicatessen products from small-scale manufacturers. Furthermore, Tide certainly lives up to its name, as incredibly beautiful driftwood pieces found along the banks of the Elbe and Danish North Sea coast are displayed in the café’s rooms – some of which are for sale.
