Hamburg entdecken mit Kapitän Tobias Pietsch

Home is where the anchor drops

Here today, there tomorrow - that's the seafaring experience.

Why stay in one place when new continents and adventures are waiting. And yet it does exist: the home port, the place in the heart, the place where you feel at home. When Captain Tobias Pietsch isn't out and about on the world's oceans with his feel-good fleet, he's at anchor in his hometown of Hamburg. We visited him on holiday and explored his favourite places with him.

Tobias' favourite route with the harbour ferries is the 62 line out to the Elbe beaches. Hamburg also has the beach feeling in the middle of the city. "Sitting at the "Strandperle", watching ships with sand beneath your feet - that's vacation," he enthuses. The trendy kiosk is packed, the atmosphere good. Children and dogs splash around in the Elbe while the container giants pass by.

Our next stop is the International Maritime Museum. A huge propeller welcomes us, glittering in the sun. "This is a museum exactly to my taste: here there are no floors, but decks. Let's see what's going on on the bridge..." 3000 years of maritime history can be seen here. Tobias strolls past ship models from Chinese junks to large sailing ships, then goes in the direction of the high-seas ocean liners. In addition to many models, even life rafts are on display here.

3.The Rooftop Sauna in the 25hours Hotel HafenCity

Can you can really leave your job behind you? "Sure", Tobias laughs, "in the sauna for example". But the Rooftopsauna where he takes us surpasses everything: Stylishly designed with an ambiance of the rough charm of container and shipbuilding, you relax under the roof of the 25hours Hotel HafenCity directly opposite the cruise terminal. There is even a logbook: 25 sailors from all over the world tell their real stories in it.

Less than half an hour later, we are in the middle of the Orient. In the Neue Flora, the rehearsal for the evening's performance of Aladdin is taking place. "The musical is fantastic. I have steered quite a few things in my life - but never a flying carpet! While Tobias plays a bit with the jinny's equipment, we want to get to the bottom of a seafaring myth: What's the truth behind the proverb "a different girl in every harbour"? "Well...", he smiles. "I can introduce you to my girlfriend!

We drive to the Schanzenviertel and it quickly becomes clear that the lady has style! The "Alte Mädchen" is a brewery inn and a craft beer bar with 60 varieties, from local Ratsherrn to bottled beers from all over the world. In his songs, Freddy Quinn called Hamburg an old girl, says Tobias. "So, question answered," he laughs.

We continue further: Tobias wants to show us the city from below without getting wet - 24 metres deep. We are in the Old Elbe Tunnel, which people and vehicles have used since 1911 to reach the other side of the Elbe. Down here there is just as much colourful activity as above: cyclists on their way to their shifts in the harbour rush past us. We are greeted by the guard's house and then go 425.5 metres straight ahead through the tiled tubes. "The reward is a view of the city you've never seen," Tobias promises. And indeed: Arriving on the other side, the harbour is at one's feet.

In the middle of the beautiful illuminated skyline of Hamburg: the Elbphilharmonie. "The building welcomes us every time we arrive in HafenCity. It makes you realize you're at home." The city's new landmark is not only a concert hall but also a spectacular 37-metre high viewing platform with a 360-degree view over the city, hotel, shop and restaurant. "It's well situated in the water; you can sleep, eat, watch and listen to concerts - just like on board! No wonder he likes the "Elphi" so much.
