Halfway between Hamburg and Schwerin, the green oasis extends around the Schaalsee. Nature lovers will get their money's worth here. The protection of species and sustainability are the top priorities at Schaalsee. Thanks to excellent water quality, numerous fish species live in Northern Germany's deepest lake.
The varied landscape can be explored by bicycle or on foot. Those who prefer to travel on the water can rent rowing boats, pedal boats or sailing boats at Schaalsee. The largest island of the lake can be reached from the shore via a dam.
The Schaalsee separates the federal states Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from each other. Before the fall of the inner-German border, the lake marked the transition from the FRG to the GDR.
