Triennal of Photography Highlights

Opening week and festival

The twelve different exhibitions of the photo Triennale 2022 start with an opening week from 20th to 22nd May and are celebrated during a festival from 2nd to 6th of June 2022.

Kick-off: Opening Week from 20 to 22 May

The Triennial kicks off with the so-called Opening Week: with curator tours through all exhibitions as well as artist talks, parties, discussions and a dance performance, you can experience art up close right at the beginning. For example, at the "Deichtorhallen - Halle für aktuelle Kunst", the artist Alfredo Jaar uses his work in "Currency: Photography Beyond Capture" as a starting point for a discussion on the possibilities of photography to reveal hidden histories (Fri, 20 May, 5:30 pm). Also there, artist Osamu James Nakagawa talks about traces of imperial occupation inscribed in landscapes (Sat, 21 May, 5.30pm). At the Museum of Hamburg History, a dance performance opens the exhibition "Macht. Means. Money" (Sat, 21 May, 11 am). And at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, co-curator Sven Schumacher will discuss "Herbert List and the queer gaze" with art and media scholar Katrin Köppert and historian Ben Miller (Sun, 22 May, 3pm). The complete programme of the opening weekend is now available online at www.phototriennale.de/map/.

Triennal throughout the city: The festival week from 2 to 6 June

With an extensive supporting programme, the festival week from 2 to 6 June over the Whitsun holidays also invites visitors to relax and discover the diverse programme of the Triennal. Entitled "The Register and the Recital", the festival is organised in cooperation with several important Hamburg cultural institutions and extends the Triennal to the entire city. The programme presents screenings, performances and guided tours of the exhibitions and invites artists, curators, photo scholars and writers to talks and readings. The complete programme of the festival is available online at the Triennal webiste in the category Festival Week.
