With an exclusive selection from its high-caliber art collection, the Museum Kunst der Westküste (MKdW) invites you on a visual sailing trip along the west coast of Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The destination port is the beautiful island of Föhr in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea. In their paintings and oil studies, the artists, including the famous Skagen painters Anna and Michael Ancher, Peder Severin Krøyer and Laurits Tuxen, tell of the dangers on the high seas, but also of places on the beach and in the dunes where you can enjoy the "blue hour" in summer. Norwegian artists such as Kitty Kielland and Christian Krohg, on the other hand, take viewers to the rough coastal regions of the north. On the Dutch coast, the artists describe the activities of the fishermen and their families. What is special about the exhibition is the interplay between historical and contemporary art: the photographs by Trine Søndergaard and Corina Gertz as well as Volker Tiemann's sculpture The Wave enrich the dialogue about "Sea & Coast" with current socially relevant questions. Jochen Hein's epochal triptych North Sea captivates viewers with its indomitable elemental power. The non-profit Museum Kunst der Westküste was founded in 2009 by the entrepreneur Prof. Dr. mult. hc Frederik Paulsen, whose family comes from Alkersum on Föhr. Located in the middle of the island, it quickly developed into a crowd puller with European appeal. The museum's own high-quality painting and graphic collection, with over 1,000 works, focuses on painting from the four North Sea countries Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands in the period from 1830 to 1930. Contemporary art - especially photography - is also an important part of the collection. In temporary exhibitions, the MKdW devotes itself to the fascinating thematic spectrum “Sea & Coast”.
