"Imagine it’s war and nobody’s going.” With this sentence, the graphics student Johannes Hartmann became known beyond the borders of Germany in the early 1980s. Then as now, the change of perspective appeals to him.

With his expressive paintings he questions how people interact with nature and humanity in social relationships.

On a transparent painting surface, the colors are applied in reverse order in a mirror-inverted working process. Strong brushstrokes and bright accents are reminiscent of the meditative calm of Asian calligraphy, while others are reminiscent of spontaneous action painting from the 1950s.

A special appeal is created by the transparency of the painting surface, which allows the work of art to relate to its hanging background.

The production of this “back painting” is demanding and is very rarely seen in exhibitions.

The Elbschloss Residenz is pleased to be able to present you with a comprehensive insight into Johannes Hartmann's current work in the Residenz Gallery.

As part of the opening on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 6 p.m., Mr. Hartmann will give us an insight into his art and anecdotes about his artistic work.

The exhibition starts on June 1st. and ends August 11th. 2024.
