In Words – Anthology
In this anthology, which we are publishing in honor of our late president Guy Stern, we have taken his “support and inspiration, work and leisure, guiding star and love,” language, as our starting point. For it is language that connects the members of our center.
Exile PEN, as our center is still called, is a small association with a long history. Founded in London in 1934 as the German PEN Club in exile, its membership list now includes around four hundred names, including famous authors who have found their place in the canon of German literature. Even today, our members are scattered all over the world, each with their own story of flight, expulsion, or emigration in the real or figurative sense. Stories that shape our lives and writing.
This volume contains previously unpublished stories, reflections, poems, reports, and essays, and bears witness to the diversity of the subject matter, but also to that of the writers who come together in our center.
