On August 23, 1664 were the spots Altona by the Danish King Frederik III. awarded the city rights. Before 1864 Altona was long the second largest city in the Danish state and until the incorporation in the city state of Hamburg in 1938, the largest city in the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein. Since 1949, Altona is one of seven districts of the Free and Hanseatic city of Hamburg.
