A crocodile on Altona beach or a wild herd of pigs as the fictional namesake of the Elbe island of Schweinesand – a large joint exhibition displays pictures of small, large, dangerous, cuddly or bizarre animals.

‘We believe that the diversity of the exhibition can provide great artistic enjoyment and pleasure for all generations, and we are very much looking forward to unleashing this artistic zoo on the public,’ says painter and graphic artist Miriam Diezmann, who has been responsible for the exhibitions in the gallery of the Elbschloss Residenz for two years.

The works approach the animal world in very different artistic styles and show the artistic range with which the subject can be dealt with.

Here: animals and humans in charming coexistence: a baby elephant that wants to read along. There: birds stealing the clothes of someone bathing in ice water.

Horses that sweep us away with their energy. Big, round eyes to fall in love with. Alert eyes that look at us critically.

The animal pictures evoke emotions in us. Are the motifs based on real events, or do they follow the stories that have been spread about them? Stories, or more precisely, poems with a wink, complement some of the pictures and complete the exhibition.
