Every May, the Hamburg Harbour - “Gate to the World” - is properly turned on its head: Over one million people celebrate its anniversary - the HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY - along the colourful “harbour mile” along the Elbe between HafenCity and the Museumshafen Oevelgönne. It’s the world’s largest harbour festival!

Special highlights are the breathtaking fireworks, ship parades as well as the one-of-a-kind “Schlepperballet” - choreographed water ballet for tugboats set to music!

Close-up experience of the fascination of seafaring

The stars of the HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY were ships and boats – some 300 vessels, with a stunning display ranging from traditional to contemporary, with a maritime diversity that is unique in Europe. They included magnificent tall ships such as the Kruzenshtern, the Mir, the Sedov, the Alexander von Humboldt II, and lovingly restored museum ships. All of them invited visitors on board, as did working vessels and naval units. These open-ship events were very popular with adults and children, and 70,000 visitors took the opportunity to take a look at life onboard for themselves. Hamburg’s new Branddirektor Westphal, the most advanced firefighting vessel in Europe, was on show at the HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY. The Energy Observer, a high-tech catamaran from France, was another big attraction – she is currently sailing round the world as an ambassador for climate protection, and is powered by renewable energies such as wind, solar and hydrogen.

A special highlight of the HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY is the yearly AIDA fireworks, which take place so close to the Elbe that the river is even more breathtaking and fascinating. To have a good view of the AIDA fireworks during the HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY, it’s imperative to get there early. Although there are many good spots around the harbour and Elbe to watch, almost nobody wants to miss the spectacular fireworks on Saturday evening. The focus of the spectacle is the Bunte Hafenmeile (‘harbour mile’) along the jetty. This is the perfect place to be if you want to enjoy the centre of the action. The culinary treats, concerts and attractions tempt you to feast as well as stroll around. If you prefer having things calmer, the Fischmarkt area or somewhat down the Elbe is just right. Another alternative is watching the colourful action from the water.

The 830th HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY was a great success

More than a million visitors from all parts of the world came to the festival, celebrating in glorious sunshine for most of the time. They enjoyed activities and atmosphere around Landungsbrücken, the Speicherstadt historic warehouse district, HafenCity, the Fish Market, and Oevelgönne Museum Harbour. The highlights included open-ship tours on many of the 300 or so ships at the festival, live transmission of a concert by world-famous violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter from the Elbphilharmonie, and the premiere of the Hamburg Active City Championships in HafenCity. The region of Occitania-Southern France made an impressive presentation as country partner.
