International Maritime Museum

Kaispeicher B in Hamburg's Speicherstadt is home to the world's largest private collection of maritime treasures from 3000 years of shipping and naval history.

The world's largest private collection of maritime treasures have found a new home in Kaispeicher B (quayside store B). The exhibition opened in 2007 in the historical Speicherstadt and is a must for all fans of model ships, U-boats and military history.

Maritime Museum and Hamburg – They clearly belong together. The Hanseatic city without shipping in unimaginable, and a visit to the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg is a must for everyone who is enthusiastic about the various aspects of the sea and seafaring. The International Maritime Museum Hamburg tells the stories of explorers and conquerors, captains and simple seafarers, and it offers an expedition through 3,000 years of human history.

In the historic building of Kaispeicher B in the Speicherstadt, Prof. Peter Tamm presents a lovingly assembled collection. Over several decades, Professor Peter Tamm senior has collected around 26,000 ship models, 50,000 construction plans, 5,000 paintings and graphics, more than 2,000 films, 1.5 million photos, 120,000 books and numerous nautical devices, historic uniforms, militaria and maritime objects.
On 10 floors and more than 11,000 square metres of exhibition space, visitors can experience shipping and marine history from 3,000 years. The exhibit is thus the world's largest private collection of its kind, and it offers fans of seafaring and everyone exhibits of historic interest – from the curious to the gruesome.

Maritime Museum in Hamburg – A great outing for the family

Fathers and sons, but of course the female members of the family as well, will have their eyes lit up while standing in front of the numerous models assembled with patience and care. You can view a Lego model of the Queen Mary 2 here made from 780,000 Lego bricks, along with the skull of famous pirate Klaus Störtebeker who was beheaded here in the city on the Elbe. On Deck 7, there is an exhibition on the deep sea, which remains mysterious to this very day, and on Deck 8 art lovers can take in the panoramic sea paintings. The exhibition offers something for every taste and age group, and interesting guided tours are offered as well. The building itself is also worth the visit. The Kaispeicher B is ten years older than the Speicherstadt itself, and thus the oldest surviving warehouse of all.
