DIALOG IM DUNKELN

Journey into absolute darkness

The DIALOG IM DUNKELN® (dialogue in the dark) in Hamburg is an important exhibition that captivates with its uniqueness. Visitors are led by blind people through a dark world of scents, sounds and temperatures. An exhibition on discovering the invisible. There is guaranteed nothing to see, but quite a bit to discover...

In the middle of Hamburg's Speicherstadt, blind and visually impaired guides lead visitors through the DIALOG IM DUNKELN ® exhibition. The exhibition is located in totally darkened rooms. Accordingly, the visitor sees no exhibits, art in the form of images or other visual impressions. It is a journey into a strange, fascinating world. It is a world in which scents, winds, various surface textures and sounds, not to mention words and the sense of touch, replace optical stimuli.

The familiar becomes inverted; the daily routine becomes a new experience. Routine situations, like a walk through the park or a visit to a café, turn into a unique adventure in the rooms without light. Visitors experience relying on blind people who are complete strangers and who lead them in complete confidence through the darkness. The blind guide thus becomes your first person of reference, since you have to rely on the guide throughout the tour. Those who see become blind; the blind become the ones who see.

Based on various environmental influences, such as smells, sounds and temperatures, you can perceive a completely new world and experience different impressions solely via the senses of smell, hearing and touch. The rooms provide a stage to re-enact a few routine situations, such as being in a bar, in the city park or in the centre of the city.
It is also possible to have a Dinner in the Dark. This takes place on various days and can only be booked with a reservation. Dinner in the Dark provides you with delicacies of a very special kind, but it's certainly not a feast for the eyes. As a part of this, the blind guides serve a four-course dinner in total darkness. The culinary journey begins in the foyer with a sparkling wine reception. A seasonally varying four-course dinner awaits you in the dark restaurant. A challenge for the palate and table manners. The Dinner in the Dark costs €65.00.
The DIALOG IM DUNKELN ® has existed in Hamburg since 2000 and it has delighted countless visitors since then. The standard 60-minute tours take place on mornings (Tue - Fri) from 9am - 12.45pm. The extended 90-minute tours take place on afternoons (Tue - Fri) from 1pm - 5pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Brunch in a quiet ambience – when non-verbal communication is everything

One restaurant, tables for eight, a share brunch – and the up to 40 guests say nothing. Deaf persons serve, and no word can be heard. Boring? Not at all: A brief introduction into the mysteries of sign language helps the guests to communicate non-verbally with each other, so that this becomes an exciting and unforgettable experience. The guests express their wishes and converse using gestures and mime. Speak with your hands and listen with your eyes – every Sunday.
