Hamburg will become the city of photography again this year
Every three years, the “Triennial of Photography” turns Hamburg into the place to be for photography enthusiasts and artists from around the world. From 20 May to 18 September 2022, the cross-sectoral exhibition will be in town again. Twelve major Hamburg art venues are taking part in the Triennial with their own exhibitions about this year’s topic of “CURRENCY”.
The leading curator Koyo Kouoh has touched the spirit of the age with the subject of CURRENCY and draws on her own academic experiences of banking before she turned her attention towards curation and became an internationally renowned curator. As the Artistic Director of the 8th “Triennial of Photography” in Hamburg, Kouoh not only raises the topics of money, value and power for discussion, but also names photography itself as an important subject of the exhibitions. Kouoh designed the exhibition parcours through Hamburg together with her international team and the curators of the twelve participating exhibition venues and museums. The 12 exhibitions open in May and many of them can be visited through to September. The Opening Week from 20 to 22 May and the Festival Week from 2 to 6 June form two highlights of this year’s program of events. Time to plan a cultural summer trip to Hamburg!
The special feature of the phototriennial is the exhibition parcours: the main subject of CURRENCY is addressed and interpreted by the twelve exhibitions from a variety of perspectives. The exhibits all belong to the realm of photography, yet are completely different from each other. Historical photo albums from colonial times, imaginative abstract images, and documentary-style photography – the Triennial offers all visitors an exhibition that will suit them.
A highlight of the parcours is the group exhibition entitled “CURRENCY: Photography Beyond Capture” at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg: How is knowledge created when the images are captured? “The Magic Eye” exhibition at the Bucerius Kunst Forum is also highly interesting and is devoted to the Hamburg photographer Herbert List and the first international survey exhibition of his work. The topic at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, meanwhile, is the circulation of images and the transfer of meaning. Under the title “Give and Take. Images upon Images”, the curators discuss the cross-border circulation of image material and the associated changes to their levels of meaning. The special alliance of Hamburg’s exhibition locations, the current themes and the international team of curators create a unique photography experience for your next visit to Hamburg.
