In order to take full advantage of the Hamburg CARD, this page helps you with tips and answers to the most frequently questions.

1. What is the difference between Hamburg CARD and Hamburg Card Light?

Only the Hamburg Card is a ticket where you have unlimited travel by buses, trains and harbor ferries in the HVV, Hamburg Public Transport Association (fare rings AB incl. Airport). Both Cards -Hamburg CARD and Hamburg CARD Light- are discount cards where you get up to a 50% discount on more than 150 offers, Restaurants and Cafes.

2. What is the difference between Hamburg CARD and Hamburg Card plus Region?

The difference ist the area, where the card is valid as a ticket for unlimited travel by bus, train and harbour ferries all day without surcharge (see question 3.).

3. In which area can I use the Hamburg Card for unlimited travel?

  • all forms of transportation belonging to Hamburg Public Transport Association (HVV) are included all day without surcharge.
  • valid for all buses, trains and harbor ferries in the Hamburg Public Transport Association (HVV) fare rings AB including Airport.
  • valid for underground, buses, express+night buses and harbor ferries.
  • valid for the days indicated until the end of the business day, meaning 6 a.m. the next morning.
  • valid for unlimited travel in the second class.

There are differences between Hamburg Card, Hamburg Card plus Region, Hamburg Card light.

  • Hamburg CARD: valid in the fare rings AB incl. Airport of the Hamburg Public Transport Association, which comprises nearly all of the relevant tourist destinations including connections to the airport.
  • Hamburg CARD plus Region: valid in the fare rings ABCDE of the Hamburg Public Transport Association. This also includes regional destinations such as Lüneburg and Stade in Lower Saxony or Ratzeburg, Mölln and Bad Segeberg in Schleswig-Holstein.

4. For how many people is the Hamburg Card valid?

  • tickets for individual persons are valid for 1 adult and up to 3 children (6 to 14 years incl.)
  • tickets for groups are valid for up to 5 persons of any age
  • there is no Hamburg CARD only for children. Children up to 6 years travel free of charge.

5. From when and for how long is my Hamburg CARD valid?

  • the Hamburg CARD is valid for the days indicated until the end of the business day, meaning 6 a.m. the next morning (no 24h ticket).
  • 2-day-ticket, 3-day-ticket, 4-day-ticket and the 5-day ticket are valid for the stated day and for the next 1, 2, 3 or 4 following days.
  • the ticket is dated and therefore does not need to be validated.

6. What advantages does the Hamburg CARD offer? How much can I save?

Free public transportation

  • for all buses, trains and harbor ferries in the Hamburg Transport Association (fare rings AB incl. Airport).
  • all-day, no surcharge, unlimited travel.

Discount

  • up to a 50% discount on more than 150 offers: Harbor-, Alster- and City tours, attractions and museums, musicals and theatre, souvenirs etc.
  • 20% discount on food and free extras or upgrades in cafés.
  • Tip: you can save 5,00 € when doing the great boat-trip around the harbor or 2,50 € when you book a city tour.
  • Please note: all prices quoted and discounts are based on adults. Please note that to some extent reductions on family and group tickets exist. No combination of discounts possible. Discounts can only be received when purchasing at a venue. They are not provided online. Discount on food and free extras upon presentation of the card before ordering.

7. Where can I buy/order the Hamburg CARD?

Directly in Hamburg: 

  • Hamburg Tourist Information Offices (main railway station, harbor, airport)
  • HVV ticket machines, service points and buses
  • many Hamburg hotels and youth hostels

8. How does the the mobile phone ticket and the online ticket work?

  • you receive the online ticket via Email as a PDF file for printing-out at home.
  • you receive your mobile phone ticket by clicking the link, which will be send to you as SMS. Therefore please enter your mobile phone number in the online booking process.
  • both tickets are immediately valid for the selected date. The tickets are exclusive to the person and cannot be transferred. The tickets are only valid in presence of the person named on the ticket (for each ticket - also group ticket- you have to enter a name). Please note that there is no exchange or refund of  tickets.

9. Does the Hamburg CARD need to be validated?

No, the Hamburg CARD is dated and therefore does not need to be validated.

10. How can I use the StadtRAD (City Bikes) with the Hamburg CARD?

Simply register at www.stadtradhamburg.de. Please note that the initial registration must be made online under the link in order to use the Hamburg CARD discount. After registering online you can borrow StadtRÄDER (City Bikes) at any time during the period of validity of your Hamburg CARD at one of over 120 bicycle rental stations at the terminal.

As a Hamburg CARD holder you don't have to pay the € 5.00 registration fee. The first 30 minutes are always free. After that you pay only € 0.06 per minute instead of € 0.08 per minute, thus saving 25%.

11. Is the Hamburg CARD transferable?

Hamburg CARDs are partially transferable. It depends what types of ticket you buy: 

  • tickets issued by the Hamburg Public Transport Association (HVV) and books of tickets purchased e.g. at the Tourist Information office at the main railway station or at the Airport Office are transferable.
  • for security reasons, all tickets bought online and via mobile phones are not transferable. These are always issued to one person only and are only valid where the person specified on the ticket is present.

12. Can I give someone the Hamburg CARD as a gift?

14. Can more than one discount be used at the same time?

No, unfortunately not. The discounts always apply to the standard price, and student or senior discounts, for example, cannot be further reduced upon presentation of the Hamburg CARD.
