Public transport in and around Hamburg

"More than a destination" - with this slogan the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV), comprising 32 transport companies, operates an extensive system of rapid transit, regional transport, bus and ferry routes in Hamburg and surrounding areas. After the expansion of the transport system in Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, the districts of Lauenburg, Pinneberg, Segeberg and Stormarn to the north and the country districts of Harburg, Lüneburg and Stade to the south are now fully integrated into the HVV.

Save yourself the time and stress of driving. In the Greater Hamburg Area, suburban and underground railways and "MetroBus" buses operate on weekdays from 5am until around 11pm at 5 to 10 minute intervals. On weekend nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday as well as public holidays the suburban and underground railways in Hamburg and Norderstedt operate continuously at 20-minute intervals. Night, express and regional buses complete the transport network.

Did you know...? To get you home safely, you can alight between stops on weekdays from 7pm and on Sundays as well as public holidays throughout the day on many bus routes in the Greater Hamburg area.

Take a harbour cruise with the HVV ticket

With your HVV ticket "you can also take to the water" and explore the Port of Hamburg and the Elbe on one of six port ferries.

Save with the Hamburg CARD

To make it easier on the travel budget, visitors to Hamburg have various options for cheaper tickets, B. group and day tickets as well as the Hamburg CARD. This gives you free travel on buses and trains in the whole Greater Hamburg area and numerous discounts on many attractions, tours, museums, theatres or even restaurants.

Arrive in Hamburg by bus

Many German tour operators offer trips to Hamburg by bus. If you wish, you can book a day trip or a trip with one or more nights' stay. Buses depart in most cases from the bus stations of larger German cities. Most companies also now offer departures from smaller towns. You can check with local travel agencies or look through the travel section of the local newspaper for relevant offers. The benefits of an organised bus trip are obvious. You don't have to stress about changes and can sit back and enjoy the journey.

Park & Ride

There are Park&Ride facilities at over 120 stops and stations in the rapid transit and regional transport network of the Greater Hamburg Region, open day and night and sometimes even covered. Many stops and stations have places to leave your bike, many of them covered.

Out and about, accessibly

Accessible stops and stations, as with the Park&Ride facilities, are indicated on the route network map. In addition, the personal online itinerary offers the option to select criteria such as "step-free" or "avoid changes". Many suburban and regional railways stations are designed to be accessible and the use of low-floor buses is steadily expanding. The HVV brochure Barrierefrei unterwegs (Out and about, accessibly) also gives an overview.
