Hand lettering is the term used to describe the trend of drawing letters. It is the art of making letters, words and whole sentences beautiful. Different fonts can be combined and small illustrations such as twigs and banners can be added to round off the lettering.
Unlike typography, the letters are not produced digitally, as can be found, for example, on websites and in magazines. And in contrast to calligraphy, the letters are not written, but drawn and developed by hand.

So-called Brush Lettering is a popular special form of Lettering. Brushes or pencils with a brush-like tip are used, which react to pressure like a hair brush. With the help of these brushpens you can achieve beautiful effects with different line widths.

Thanks to this flexibility, hand-lettering results can be very different, e.g. elegant, cool, playful, cute, colourful, solid or light. Anyone can develop the style that suits them best.

It is helpful for the participants to get to know letters a little better. In special lettering workshops, for example, Martina Janssen from Bremen by Lettering by Martina Johanna deals with the anatomy of letters and tries to explain the character of different alphabets and show how to create a certain character.
Why workshops, when there are thousands of instructions on the Internet?
The difficult thing when you start with hand lettering is to focus on drawing the letters and getting away from writing. One often falls back into writing, but hand lettering is about consciously creating the letters. You can take your time. While you write your name in a few seconds, it can take several hours to design a lettering.

Besides, there's so many things to watch out for: On the constant size of the characters, on the same character spacing, on the individual forms of the character etc.  Sometimes you actually forget a letter or the i-dot lands on the wrong letter.

Martina explains and shows in her workshops how this works and takes time for each participant. With the right instructions and a little practice, participants usually achieve beautiful results within a few hours, which they often admire themselves.

Where do the workshops take place?
The workshops in Hamburg are organized by Nadja Dünnwald Events and take place in different locations. The creative time-out needs a suitable location: While at home you may only take a short time for lettering and be distracted by the household, in the workshop you take the time to concentrate fully on lettering. Martina and Nadja therefore always pay attention to the choice of the right location and setting in their lettering workshops in order to create a beautiful, relaxed and creative atmosphere.

What is the aim of a Lettering Workshop?
Clearly: to motivate and inspire! In addition to the basics and techniques, the participants should learn how to approach lettering. How the idea becomes the finished product, e.g. a homemade invitation or birthday card. But it's not only on paper that you can letter well. Virtually all surfaces and materials can be written on creatively: e.g. preserving jars, shelves, folders, windows, stones and even garments.
