Caspar David Friedrich is renowned as the Romantic painter par excellence, his works icons of an age of major social upheaval. To mark the 250th anniversary of his birth, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting over 100 of his paintings and drawings, including what are widely considered his most important works. The exhibition offers the most comprehensive panorama of his art in many years. How did Friedrich’s haunting, atmospheric landscapes point to the future? At the heart of his work is always the interaction between human and nature. For no matter how pristine the natural world may appear in many of his images, it is inconceivable without its human inhabitants. Friedrich often portrays his figures from the rear as they look out across the landscape. But even images of deserted stretches of land infer a human viewpoint. Today, in times of climate change, this relationship between human and nature is more topical than ever.
