    When a ship comes in from the northern sea to the 18 kilometers wide mouth of the Elbe River, about 107 kilometers great river journey lies in front of them bevor the enter the port of Hamburg. The Elbe is more than a river – it’s a 727 kilometers long body of water. The center of the harbor lies at kilometer 620 (Landungsbrücken), where also the Alster enters the stream. Experience the journey in four sections.

    Part 1: Schleusenland

    Driving along the small island Neuwerk at the North Sea, you can already see the long beach of Duhnen in Cuxhaven. There are many sand beaches at the Lower Elbe that are also used as swimming spots. With four kilometers however, Duhnen is the longest one.

    Between Landungsbrücken and Speicherstadt swims everything that the maritime heart desires: ferries, freighter, tugboats and the dockyards in the background. For some locals this makes the romantic atmosphere of the port of Hamburg.
