Foundation Wasserkunst Elbinsel Kaltehofe - Wasserkunst

Industrial monument, Museum, Nature park

    Wasserkunst Kaltehofe

Located on the Elbisland “Kaltehofe”, the former waterworks provided Hamburg with drinking water for over a hundred years. In the past, the plant consisted of 22 filter basins, making it the most unique one throughout Europe. After the waterworks were closed down, the island was left untouched for approximately 20 years. The museum on Kaltehofe provides information about plants history, as well as the interesting facts about “Hamburg Wasserspiele”. Furthermore, visitors can also view the islands significant features, the so-called “Schieberhäuschen” which were designed by Speicherstadt architect Franz Andreas Meyer. Nowadays, a third of Germany’s bat species, over 40 types of birds and numerous protected plants are common inhabitants on the island. These can be discovered by using the nature trail across the plant, which is accessible to the public. Additionally the foundation Wasserkunst offers a variety of events making a visit more worthwhile.
