Golf for beginners

If you want to play golf in the German-speaking part of the world you need a licence, a sort of golf driving licence, unless you want to play exclusively on public short and 9-hole courses.

This licence has a theoretical and practical part, in which a specific number of tees, as a rule 9, must be played with a specific, maximum number of shots. If you have passed this test (the course generally takes between 10-16 hours, that are spread over several weeks or weekends) you are awarded your licence or "permission" and you are automatically given a handicap of 54, which permits you to play on most of the golf courses in Germany.

You can book a course for your licence and to learn the game of golf directly in just about any of the golf clubs in the "golf region of Hamburg" or any of the partner clubs. The courses are led by a professional golf instructor, a so-called "golf professional". The cost of a course, which are mainly held in groups, starts from about €150 per person. Clearly, if you prefer individual tuition, you will have to pay more. Naturally, balls and clubs are provided. They are provided free of charge during the lessons. All you need are sturdy shoes and, ideally, a simple golf glove (€7-10). In some of our partner clubs you can ideally combine getting your licence with a short stay in the Hanseatic city, as there are a number of clubs that offer courses over the weekend.

As well as the licence, for your further "golf career" you will need club membership with a licence from the German Golf Association (Deutschen Golfverbandes [DGV]) in order to be allowed to play on the majority of German and international golf courses. Many clubs offer their newly qualified golfers attractive entry models. Make some enquiries. Also, during your orientation and entry phase you might like to opt for a so-called "distance membership" (i.e. you receive a membership to a standard golf club incl. the DGV licence, but without golfing rights on the course), which can be obtained from €120 p.a. .

We wish you a lot of fun with your golf and we would be delighted to welcome you to the "golf region of Hamburg" on your next golfing holiday.
