Hamburg Christmas market, on one of the largest areas and one of the grandest in north Germany, has been a magnet for visitors in the pre-Christmas season for many years.

With approximately 150 large and small Christmas stalls and numerous attractions for children and adults, it extends across Gerhard-Hauptmann-Platz, Spitalerstrasse, Mönckebergbrunnen, Jacobikirchhof and all around the St.-Petri-Kirche in the city centre.

The brilliance of thousands of light bulbs illuminates a small Christmas city on the square at Mönckebergstrasse. Craftsmen can be observed working in their little workshops. There is spinning, carving, polishing, firing, engraving and much more. A nearly endless variety of unusual gift ideas as well as an attractive cultural programme are an invitation to stay a while, along with the scent of freshly baked "Berliner" (doughnuts), apple turnovers, cinnamon stars or steaming chestnuts.

Dolls, crystals, pokerwork, wooden toys, freshly roasted chestnuts, mistletoe, Jericho roses, candles and Cartesian Devils and much more. – illuminated by sparkling decorations, the pedestrian zone on Spitalerstrasse is transformed into an enchanting shopping mile. A nostalgic carousel on Mönckebergbrunnen keeps the little ones busy while the parents enjoy aromatic mulled wine under the giant Christmas pyramid.

A nativity scene with artfully carved, life-sized figures is not only a symbol of the traditional celebration of the Christian church; at the same time, it serves as collecting point for the St. Petri church alms. On a platform at the foot of the tree, famous choirs sing, prayers and Christmas concerts are held, as well as special activities for children.
