Queen Mary 2
Three times as long as Hamburg Town Hall, nearly as tall as St. Michaelis church and in terms of luxury (a suite with butler costs around 40,000 euros per day) almost unbeatable: The Queen Mary 2 is one of the largest and most impressive cruise ships in the world! As a unique ocean liner she regularly crosses the Atlantic – with a route stop in Hamburg.
For Hamburg locals, "QM2 Day" is already a real tradition - and in 2012 they had the opportunity to experience live six visits by the ocean queen ! Sightseers and non-passengers can admire the stately lady best from the View Point in the HafenCity.
The construction of the proud luxury liner is for many the realisation of a cruise dream - and it cost around 800 million dollars! The ship weighs 151,400 tonnes, is around 345 metres long, 72 metres high (from keel to chimney), has a draught of around 9.76 metres, is approximately 41 metres wide (45 metres on the bridge wing) and can travel up to 55.5 kilometres per hour, in part due to its 157,000 horse power.
But it's not just the technical details that impress: With the new QM 2 , equipped with a classic black hull, the grand cruise tradition experienced its rebirth - in a "very British" style and with the most modern fittings!
The 2,620 passengers are offered all imaginable luxuries on 15 decks. Spiral staircases, large dome-shaped rooms, a huge ballroom, a 360-degree promenade deck, state of the art fitness facilities, a thalassotherapy pool with whirlpools and waterfalls and the world's first planetarium on board a ship make the QM2 a ship of superlatives. There are around 1,250 crew members. The interior is designed in the Art Deco style of the 1920s. Over 5,000 artworks by internationally renowned artists, of which 300 are specially made originals, and around 4,000 limited edition prints adorn the Queen Mary 2.
